Oh what a busy term 3

Fifth classes have had an extremely busy term 3 this year. There has been so much learning going on along with many activities.

The students took part in a drumming workshop at the start of the new year. This workshop was a fantastic opportunity to introduce the students to drumming. The each had their own drum and worked as a team to create brilliant rhythms and beats. It was very enjoyable for all!

The students also took part in a lego workshop this term. They were set the challenge of making a race car that moved out of lego. They worked in pairs to construct their race car and use sources of electricity to power it. This was a tricky but very rewarding task. At the end of the workshop, each pair raced their car to find out who made the fastest.

On the 12th of May, all fifth classes went on an orienteering trip to Fota Arboretum. It was a very exciting day out! The girls learned all about orienteering from Sean, the instructor, and then work in pairs or threes to locate 18 controls around Fota. The map was a struggle to read at first but once the students got going, they were able to follow it and find all the controls. The teams were timed which resulted in one winning team at 22 minutes. The team who came second finished the course in 23 minutes. It was a great day out. Everyone was exhausted after the walking and fresh air.

Here in SCM, we hold an annual summer show. Although the 6th classes take the parts, the remaining classes are highly involved in performing dances, songs and poetry. Preparation is underway at the moment for the play which will be held in June. The fifth classes are working hard learning two dances and two songs. The dances are tricky but we are all determined to learn them perfectly for the big performance.

There has been a mixture of art and gardening also taking place this term. It is safe to say we have been very busy and learning so many new skills. We are very excited to see what the end of the term will bring for us.
